Ash’s reappearance in his life is just the catalyst Dan needs to escape the rut he’s fallen into…and win back Ash’s trust and love.Ashton Yager, once burned and now a little bit shy, didn’t mean to publicly come out as bisexual. But now that he has, he’s got to deal with the consequences, including the fact that it might’ve cost him his NHL contract. With his job on the line, he needs to keep his head down, work hard, and play the best hockey of his life. Rekindling things with Dan? That’s not exactly keeping a low profile. It’s also never going to happen, not after Dan walked away once without an explanation. When a hurricane forces Ash to seek shelter out-of-state, he and Dan find themselves in the same B&B, where old feelings resurface. But with everything Ash has on the line, does he dare play with fire again?

Book The Nature of the Game (Stick Side Book 2) Review :

The Nature of the Game, the second book in Amy Aislin's Stick Slide series was a sweet M/M hockey romance.Dan (Mitch's brother from the first book) is struggling with his work at his mom's company after it was revealed what she did to him 6 years ago, blackmailing him with ruining his brother. Now he lives his regret over his actions more than ever especially when the other person he lost then returns to his life as his brother's boyfriend's best friend.Ash was devasted when six years ago Dan left him with a text. Since then, he was married and lived a closed off but okay life as a hockey player in his home town.Seeing Dan again is a shock and he refuses to hear the man out.But fate somehow stirs them in to the same places and they don't have any other choice but relive and learn from the past. The Story:The 'broken up without talking about it and years later regretting it and starting over' trope is not new to romance but this was executed pretty well. I liked how although it was not entirely Dan's fault he still felt a tremendous amount of guilt over it and didn't try to forget it just prove he wasn't going to commit the same mistakes. Also Ash's reluctance to jump back into the past felt real. And his actions spoke volumes about how hard it is to move past hurt. The hurricane was a new and strange twist in the story but it gave it substance and an environment where they could show their true colours. The Characters:Most of the book was about the two men realising their mistakes and their feelings.Dan's kind heart led him to be blackmailed by his mom to protect the people he loved. And that cost him a lot. He faded over the years not knowing true happiness anymore. When he gets a chance to breathe again he still feels a lot of guilt over what happened and tries to make amends.I liked the woodworking angle. It's sucha perfect job for someone like Dan. Kind and loving.. and making small trinkets marked with meaningful symbols seems fitting.Ash, though not showing to everyone, still suffered behind his cheerful, fun-guy facade from the past. He doesn't trust people to stay by him because once he was left via a text. And his reluctant to revisit the past and get an explanation out of fear that it wouldn't change anything. It is clear though that he is still very much charmed by Dan who is different yet the same. And that's dangerous to his heart and he does some stupid shit to not hurt.It was a nice story. Although it seems like there is a lot of room for angst it was not much on that department. I missed it a little. But all in all it was a fun read with sweet characters. But it was a bit slow going.
I liked this book even better than the first, as this story hit me right in the heart. Fate stepped in to give two men with a past together a second chance. But, can Ash and Dan learn from the past and forgive what tore them apart? Or will a manipulative mother, destroyed trust, and the nature of “coming out” as anything but heterosexual in professional sports doom their reunion? Are they both strong enough the second time around to fight for what they’ve always wanted? This book is definitely not a stand-alone, as it builds on the characters and storyline found in book one. This is a slow-burn exes to friends to lovers story, but once the heat is turned on it can’t be turned off as easily. I can’t wait to see which character gets his HEA next, although I have my fingers crossed for a few 🤞🏻😊❤️
